I'm still thinking about the great time we had this past weekend with John and Isabelle. They came for an 'overnight' at our house while their mom and dad attended a wedding in Racine. So Saturday morning they arrived with their sleeping bags, blankets, bag of toys for each, bag of extra clothes (which really came in handy when Izzy spilled her glass of milk into her lap at supper time), movies, bubbles, sidewalk chalk and car seats (you never can tell when we might get brave and decide to take them on a field trip).
Well, the weather at the beginning of our visit wasn't too nice....I kept looking out the window hoping the rain would clear so we could go outside. Now as a Grandma, I should know better. Don't tell your grandkids that you plan on taking them to the park when you have no control of the weather. I may have to go back to "Grandparent's School" for a refresher course. Poor John....you would have thought that if he didn't get to the park, the whole weekend was shot. Luckily, lunch time arrived but I'm not divulging what they had for lunch. It would just make their mother shake her head besides....hey, they ate (I really think we had the four food groups covered), they had milk and/or apple juice and were happy little campers.
The sun did finally peek out and we all hustled (at record speed) outside with the bubbles and chalk. It was a little cool out and as everyone knows, I'm always trying to bundle kids up. So, I asked John where their jackets were...."We didn't bring them, Grandma". Another reason to go back to Grandparent's School....I believed him. I was so happy to get them outside that I didn't give it a second thought (no time to second thoughts when dealing with a 3 year-old and 5 year-old who are suffering from cabin fever) so out we went. Great time!! We had bubbles flying all the way across our street to the little boy on the other side and bubble liquid up and down the front of John. Hey, we didn't care.....we had extra clothes, remember?
Then we busted out the chalk. Grandpa decided to teach John how to play tic-tac-toe but I had to step in to teach the young "grasshopper" some strategy so Grandpa wouldn't whip him in every game. He loves to learn new things and he caught on pretty good.....however, the one thing he could not understand is that sometimes there is no winner in this game. I guess at his age, there is always a "winner", if it's a game.
Grandpa and I had a few laughs trying to remember how to draw a hopscotch. We even made an emergency call to Shelly so she could guide us but we all know she NEVER answers her phone so we were on our own. Our final guess is pictured above.....yeah, the bottom white box was added after we remembered we needed 10 spaces but it still didn't look right to me but it was time to go back inside since it started to sprinkle. Besides, with all the chalk and bubble juice all over John and Izzy, they had a date with the bathtub! No bathtub toys but I did what I usually do, hit the tupperware cupboard for PLASTIC of any kind. They managed to flood the bathroom floor so I guess my measuring cups did the worked just fine.
Supper (more some kind of food) and bedtime went great and they slept till 7:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Izzy woke up crying in the middle of the night so she ended up in bed with me but it was wonderful snuggling with a warm little person. It just doesn't get any better than that!
P.S. We made it to the park the next morning. I am also happy to say that there were hopscotches painted on the playground and YES!!! We did have ours right...after we had added the white box that is.
