If you have ever been in a weight-loss program or just lost weight on your own (kudos to you), you are very familiar with the word "plateau". It's one of the words that gets thrown around during weight loss; actually, I don't know why they just don't call it what it actually is....STUCK!! The way I understand it, "you've reached a plateau" is suppose to sound less disturbing to prevent you from feeling discouraged and about to throw in the towel because you have not lost any weight since your last weigh-in. Well, here's a newsflash.....they can use any word they choose....but when it comes right down to it, stuck is stuck!! And the longer you are stuck at a number on that scale, the more irritated you become and it gets really hard to ignore those 11 bags of M & M's you have stashed way up in your closet (don't ask).
I hit a 'plateau' weeks ago when I started to battle this 1/2 pound that won't go away and stay away. Anyone who has ever been on a weight-loss program knows how it works and how it can play havoc with your mind and self-esteem. One week, I lose it and the next, it's back and then we start the whole thing over again. And that pesty little 1/2 pound can be a sneaky little culprit. It can be there when I step on the scale in the morning on weigh-in day but be gone by the time I go to bed...or sure...at night when nobody is recording the numbers and can congratulate you. Then you spend a week keeping track of every morsel you shove in your mouth, step up the exercise and BAM, it's back on the next weigh-in date. WTH!!
Well, while I'm not-so-happily 'stuck' on my 'plateau', I will keep reminding myself that I will get past this and try to concentrate on the weight that I have lost so far. I will hold my head up high and will contain my hostility with my scale and not toss it in the trash. I will stay on program and hope that eventually, that 1/2 pound will get tired of playing mind games with me and move on to someone else.......I hope, I hope. As for the M & M's stashed away, they are still safe because I've been having too much trouble battling myself deciding what bag to eat first.
