It's been almost two months since Grandpa retired and I'm happy to say that we have not made each other NUTS and we are both alive and doing great. In fact, we are quite happy with the new lifestyle of a retired couple. We have settled into a routine that seems to work for us. I'm an early riser and Grandpa likes to sleep in. So, I take advantage of that and catch up with my computer adventures of Facebook and my Blog while enjoying my first cup of coffee in the nice quiet house. In the afternoon, while I might nap for a while, Gandpa watches T.V. or may also catch a few winks. I don't watch daytime T.V. (I'm a reader) so Grandpa watches what he likes; stuff on cable and sports shows. As you know from previous blog entries, we have taken up walking so that is scattered throughout the day when the urge hits us or Sparkles whines at us long enough because she wants to do 'walkies'. We eat supper rather early (like a lot of older people, so I hear) and then we both hop on our computers (he catches up on his e-mail and plays games and I usually catch up on my G.H. episodes) for a while before we take our last walk of the day. After that comes the T.V. programs that we like to watch together like 'Housewifes of......', 'Big Brother', along with other cable shows. We both still have some of the jobs around the house that we had while we were working like he cuts the grass and I do the laundry but we both now take turns cooking. Grandpa is a GREAT cook...better than me, I think. We are usually in bed by 10:00 p.m. along with the dogs. We are homebodies so we don't run around in the car or shop a lot. Grocery shopping once a week and occasional trips to Sam's Club. And, taking Great-Grandma Scherrer shopping to Walmart once a week, if she needs it which also means stopping at McDonald's for our ice cream cone...yes, even in the morning! That's about the extent of our traveling around but it works for us. (Oh, and trips to Madison to visit Becky and family when we need a Grandparent's 'fix').
All in all, we are enjoying retirement and I totally enjoy having Grandpa home for company. He makes me laugh a lot and keeps me hopping. I'm not saying that we don't have our 'moments' but nothing like the horror stories I heard about some other retired couples. We are both content not working any more but hope to find part-time jobs in Tennessee for fun and to keep us active, not that living with two little girls won't do that!
Now, if we could just get this house SOLD, that would be really nice!

I'm glad to hear that things are working well with you and grandpa. How I wish, I could be with my own grandpa. Last year, he decided to join his friends and live in a fantastic retirement communities in Charlotte. Every time I pay him a visit, I'm just thankful because every I can see that he's happy and that he is retiring magnificently. I just hope that I could visit him more often but I live so far from him.
Well, thanks for sharing your experience. I certainly enjoy reading your post.
