Last spring before I 'retired' from my position as a legal secretary from the 'fancy-schmancy' law firm downtown because my brain was fried and we decided it was a good time to get the house ready to put on the market (subject of many of my blogs about that time), a friend wanted to know if I wanted some perennial lilies that she was trying to thin out in her yard. Of course I said yes....hey, I love those plants that come up by themselves every year. Who wouldn't? Well, after I got them home in the trunk of my car, it was a different story. I already had a lot of perennials but they were FREE so was I to pass them up? But where to stick them? That was then the question. Some of them ended up on the side of our house where there was some space because we usually planted annuals there every year. The remainder were planted in a bare space in the back yard next to the patio where a fountain/planter (which was really beat up by then, looking pretty ugly and basically was a breeding ground for mosquitos) used to sit. When I brought home the plants, the fountain was in the garage where we usually stored it for the winter and I think we had decided by that time that it was not going to be with us for another year (which turned out to be true - it was taken apart and trashed in the big "clean-up") so it was the perfect space for the rest of the lilies.
Ok, that was in the spring. Now, I really didn't expect these plants to produce much the first summer since they had just been transplanted but I was still a little disappointed by their little bit of growth and no flowers. But, as you can see, I didn't have anything to worry about. Year two and look at them! That's me measuring the ones on the side of the house. Every time I come out the back door, I think of that movie with the talking evil plants - can't remember the name of it right now. But, there was this huge fly-eating plant in it. If anyone out there knows the name of this flick, please enlighten me. I mean look at them!! They are huge!! The other picture is of those in the back yard getting taller than our fence, but I have to admit that they did fill up that empty spot rather nicely.
I hear they spread and multiply but I'm sort of glad that we won't be around next summer to see how far they go because they just may decide to get a little out-of-hand and I don't own a machete.
And, NO....we are not digging them up and taking them with us to Tennessee!

Your lilies look great. Mine are a little taller then mine. My mother is so mad at me hers only come up to her knee!!! I do what she does, I guess I'm just lucky!
Barb! The movie you're thinking of is "Little Shop of Horrors" with the live Venus Fly-Trap. We still miss you here at the "fancy-schmancy" downtown law firm :-D Hope all is well!
