A month had passed since my last day of work and I started to get my barings on dismantling and gutting this house to put it on the market. Hadn't gotten into the heavy-duty scraping and painting yet but I could tell I was getting the itch to jump in. Actually, I really surprised myself during those months of working on our house. I became a hard-core "tosser"; in other words......a lot got thrown out. I wasn't even going to waste my energy and time planning and organizing a rummage sale to earn what.....about $1.50? So, stuff either was given away, thrown out or taken to Good Will. Purple Heart made one or two stops at our house during that time along with a junk man who came and moved the freezer out of the basement and took away excess lumber and plywood we had laying in the basement and garage. The whole experience was very liberating; hitting the rafters in the garage, and gutting Grandpa's workroom (he also got pretty tough on himself on what should stay and what had to go).
I look at the house now and am amazed at how nice it looks and uncluttered. When we were finished and ready to put the "FOR SALE" sign up, I asked Grandpa why it took us so long (years) to get around to doing the job of really cleaning out our house after 35 years. His answer......being lazy, no incentive, no need to rush, no real reason to do it.
Our reason, incentive and need to rush came when we decided to move on to the next chapter of our lives and buy our retirement home in Tennessee. That's what it took and it one of the best decisions we have ever made and I will not look back; only forward.
If you want to follow my adventures of how our house was transformed, feel free to go back and look through my blog archives starting with the month of May 2009. You might be amazed and surprised at what has been accomplished and maybe even get a few giggles while reading it.
