As we all know, Grandpa will be retiring on May 31st so I've been running around taking pictures of some of the items that sort of 'highlight' his career (not just his 'career' but the little quirks that got him through 41 years as a sheet metal worker)......sort of "A Day in the Life of Grandpa, the Tinner".
Here we have one of Grandpa's favorite lunch-box treats; Little Debbie Swiss Rolls, aka "Ding Dongs". I don't remember when he started making this item an important part of his lunch but I know it's been many years. How he got stuck on this little treat since he really isn't a big chocolate fan, is a mystery to me. All I know is that this item was a regular on our weekly shoopping list and heaven help us if we forgot to grab a box and toss it in the cart! The box contains 6 packages of these delectible treats (which probably have so many preservatives in them that there are probably many of them sitting in landfills as we speak) but only 5 work days in a week. So, what do you do? Do you carry over the 6th pack until the next week? Can't do that because after a few weeks, you would have all these left over packages mounting up and getting stale. So.....Grandpa came up with "Double Ding-Dong Thursday". Now, I don't know why he picked Thursday and not Friday which is the last work day of the week....but, hey, it's HIS call. When Thursday comes along, he tosses two in his lunch box, which leaves one left for Friday and then we start over on Monday since we go grocery shopping on Saturdays. In all the years that he's been packing his lunch (yes, he DOES pack his own lunch) I think there may have been a few weeks he went without his Little Debbies because the shelf at the store was empty or we didn't go grocery shopping......but VERY few!
When we went grocery shopping this past Saturday, Grandpa picked up two boxes....I asked him "For your last two weeks?" "Yep" and he smiled.
