We lost a dear, dear friend yesterday. A wonderful lady who befriended me years ago when we moved into our first home. Shirley was the first to extend her hand to welcome us and was there so many times over the years (too many to count) when I needed a helping hand, person to talk to or laugh with. She was a phone call away or all I had to do was walk across the street and knock on her door. But not only that.....Shirley had a gift. She was the 'pied piper' of kids. She babysat out of her home and touched numerous young lives over the years, including our two daughters. She treated all the kids on our block like her own and she earned their respect and love. She was always watching over them and some would say that she was our children's "guardian angel". Shirley may be now gone but while she was with us, she touched countless lifes with her kindness, smile, loving hand and spirit and I will miss her dearly.
Our Friendship
One day without asking,
A miracle did happen,
When you became a blessing,
Like an Angel sent from heaven.
I’m thankful for that day,
And the friendship that we found.
You always know just what to say,
And when to be around.
You never run from trouble,
You come running with open arms,
Nothing is ever too much to handle,
Because of your Angel charms.
So I want to thank you,
From the bottom of my heart.
I know one thing is true,
Our friendship will never part.
One day without asking,
A miracle did happen,
When you became a blessing,
Like an Angel sent from heaven.
I’m thankful for that day,
And the friendship that we found.
You always know just what to say,
And when to be around.
You never run from trouble,
You come running with open arms,
Nothing is ever too much to handle,
Because of your Angel charms.
So I want to thank you,
From the bottom of my heart.
I know one thing is true,
Our friendship will never part.
Goodbye........"Toothfairy"

I remember when she would babysit for us and sometimes make french toast for lunch. She had all the toppings...butter, powdered sugar, cinnamon, REAL sugar, and she let us top our french toast with whatever and how much we wanted. I used to make myself sick with sweetness!
I also remember when I had quite an interest in playing football and she told me me that a girl can do anything a boy can do and then sent me outside to practice with her boys. I had the best arm of my eighth grade class!
Thank you, Shirley, for being such an important part of my childhood and for keeping an eye on us all.
I will never forget you.
